Background

Rob went to school in Plymouth; alongside my academic work, he also played the trumpet in our school orchestra and sang in our four section choir for concerts. He was awarded the role of Deputy Head Boy during sixth form years.

Rob obtained a Natural Science degree from Cambridge University in 1993. During this time he carried out some summer jobs at the Marine Biological Association of the UK in Plymouth, looking at the genetic material of deep sea hydrothermal vent organisms. He also carried out a third year research project to examine the sensory receptors of locusts using electron microscopy.

Rob then came to Sheffield to study medicine, obtaining this second degree in 1998. Basic surgical and higher surgical Orthopaedic training was also completed in the Sheffield region, along with a specialist Fellowship in Hand and Wrist surgery at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals in 2012.

His NHS job is at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he work across all three sites. He commenced this in 2014 and am now one of two Hand and Wrist specialist orthopaedic surgeons. They hold regular multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss routine work and unusual cases. He had the role of Clinical Governance lead for Bassetlaw Hospital for 2 years, and rota organiser lead for the department for 2 years. He is now developing the role of Staff Grade and Associate Specialist Mentor for orthopaedics in our hospitals, helping this group to develop their careers. He acts as Clinical Supervisor to some of our junior surgical staff and have also helped to train some of our orthopaedic registrars in the region.

He regularly attends the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) meetings, to keep up to date with current thinking and developments in the field. He has published on outcomes of pyrocarbon joint replacement in the hand, and presented outcomes of a particular hand fracture fixation implant to the BSSH.

Rob offer a personal, friendly and bespoke approach to solving hand and wrist surgery problems for patients, based on the needs and lifestyle of a patient. He works closely with Hand Therapists to maximise early return to function after surgery, where possible. He is always frank and honest with his patients.

When not at work, Rob enjoys swimming, woodworking, general house renovation and spending time with hiswife and two children.
