Background
Alex Anderson was appointed as an NHS Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Rotherham General Hospital in 2007 after his Basic Surgical Training in East Anglia (Norfolk and Norwich Hospital) and subsequent Higher Surgical Orthopaedic Training in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Mr Anderson specialises solely in knee surgery after undertaking highly sought after and respected UK knee fellowships during his training in Harrogate and Sheffield and extensive clinical experience since with a busy NHS and private practice since his Consultant appointment over 15 years ago. He is currently the Clinical Director of the Rotherham Foundation Trusts Trauma and Orthopaedic Department where he continues to develop the service at Rotherham Hospital enhancing the departments growing reputation.
Originally from Suffolk Alex embarked on his career over 30 years ago, starting early at University in Newcastle at the age of 17, completing his medical degree in 1996 and continuing to progress rapidly thereafter; achieving both his post graduate qualifications, the Membership and Orthopaedic Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons (MBBS, FRCS(Orth)), in the shortest time possible such that he was only 32 years of age when he obtained his substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon post. This is one of, if not, the youngest ever Consultant Surgical appointments in the UK in the last 30 yrs.
During his career he has been awarded prizes for his research interests that have been published in international orthopaedic journals. His training has seen him work with many highly respected Orthopaedic Surgeons including two past presidents of the British Orthopaedic Association (Mr H Phillips, Mr J Getty), two past presidents of the British Trauma Society (Mr J Albert, Mr A D Patel), and a past president of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (Mr M Glasgow).
He treats all aspects of knee surgery in patients of all ages (Thornbury BMI only if <16 yrs) including complex problems from arthroscopy and soft tissue surgery for sports injuries through to arthroplasty (primary and revision). This includes; single and multiple ligament reconstruction, meniscal and chondral disorders, osteotomies, unicompartmental (partial) and total knee replacements and he is involved in international research trials. As with all of our SOL surgeons with its strong governance structure Mr Anderson consistently demonstrates excellent patient related outcome measures and low reoperation and complication rates compared to other UK surgeons.
Mr Anderson is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, he is presently a member of a number of orthopaedic societies (BOA, BASK, ISAKOS, ESSKA) and continues to be actively involved in research having published in national and international journals. He enjoys teaching and training junior doctors and future surgeons as faculty on national exam courses arthroscopic workshops. As an Educational Superviser to 11 orthopaedic trainees over the years he successfully helped guide all of them through to their Consultant posts too.
