Ashley Cole was a medical student in Nottingham and did his surgical training in Sheffield with Spinal Fellowships in Nottingham, Brisbane and America. He has been a Consultant Spinal Surgeon in Sheffield since 2003. In addition to his spinal practice at Claremont Hospital, he has a full-time NHS commitment at both Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the Northern General Hospital. His interest in outcome evaluation resulted in co-developing the British Spine Registry whilst on the British Association of Spine Surgeons Executive between 2010 and launch in 2012. He is still actively involved with this project and has been Clinical Lead for the British Orthopaedic Association Registry Unification Project. He has completed two theses on spinal deformity, the first of these as a medical student.
He is currently President of the British Scoliosis Society and on the Executive Committee of the UK Spinal Societies Board and remains the Spinal Chair of the Orthopaedic Expert Working Group advising NHS Digital on spinal coding and tariff. After being a member of the last Spinal Taskforce, he became Chair of the Spinal Surgery Clinical Reference Group advising NHS England on commissioning specialised spinal surgery (2012-2019). He has now moved into clinical research as Chief investigator of the NIHR funded Bracing Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (BASIS) Study.
