Background

Paul Sutton MB ChB, FRCS, FRCS (Tr. & Orth.),  graduated as Batchelor of Medicine and Surgery from Sheffield University in 1990 and was a general surgical trainee in Sheffield and Leeds. After passing the FRCS examination and becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh he joined the Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Programme in 1995. Whilst on this programme he developed his interest in knee and sports related Orthopaedics. Paul furthered this interest and expertise with a twelve-month period spent working at the Adidas Sports Medicine Institute (www.sportsmed.net.nz) in Auckland, New Zealand with Barry Tietjens and his partners Bruce Twaddle and Stuart Walsh. This unit is internationally renowned as a centre of excellence for sports and knee surgery and Barry is well known as a past president of ISAKOS, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (www.ISAKOS.com) Paul was appointed as an NHS Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon with a specialist interest in knee surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in May 2001

Over the past 21 years Paul has gained significant experience working in busy NHS practice. Working in a tertiary referral centre within one of largest NHS trusts in the UK has allowed Paul to develop a specific practice working exclusively as a knee surgeon. Paul treats the whole range of adult knee conditions but within his NHS practice he sees a large of volume of ‘second opinion’ patients. Sheffield is one of only a small number UK centres commissioned to offer Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation; this surgery involves growing patients’ own articular cartilage (bearing surface) cells in a laboratory and then re-implanting these cells into areas of damage or injury. Paul is the clinical lead for this service.

In his private practice Paul treats athletes of all abilities but also has a specialist practice treating knee injuries in elite athletes, from Olympians to Premiership Footballers. Paul works closely with the medical teams of most of the professional football clubs in the area and several outside Yorkshire.

Outside work Paul describes himself as an ‘’enthusiastic sportsman who enjoys the challenge of trying to stay fit despite my age’’.
